💡Concentrated hydrochloric acid is the most dangerous chemical most pool owners handle. It burns skin and eyes on contact, the fumes damage lungs and corrode metal, and it must never come near chlorine because the two together produce chlorine gas. Wear eye protection and gloves, work in open air with the wind behind you, and always pour acid into water rather than water into acid.

  • Fix total alkalinity before you keep buying acid for pH. Alkalinity is the buffer that determines how hard your pH is to move, and a pool sitting well above 120 ppm will bounce back up after every adjustment, which means you keep dosing forever. Correcting alkalinity properly is a one off project that permanently reduces how much acid the pool consumes each season.
  • Work out why the pH is rising rather than treating it weekly. Common causes are a new render or plaster surface curing and leaching alkalinity, a salt chlorinator which raises pH as a by product of its normal operation, an aerated water feature stripping carbon dioxide out of the water, or continually topping up with hard alkaline mains water. Each has a different fix, and identifying it is worth more than any bulk buying discount.
  • Buy acid in the container size you will actually use within a season and store it properly. Hydrochloric acid fumes corrode nearby metal, including garden tools, the pool equipment and the shed itself, so a well sealed container stored separately and away from chlorine is both a safety measure and a way of avoiding replacing things you did not expect to replace.
  • Dose in smaller stages than you think you need. Overshooting into acidic water is the expensive mistake, because water below about 7.0 etches render and pebble surfaces, corrodes metal fittings and ladders, and damages heater components, and correcting it means buying buffer to bring it back up. Adding two thirds of the calculated dose, circulating, then retesting is slower and consistently cheaper.

Why pool pH matters more than most owners realise

pH is the master variable in pool water chemistry, and almost every other problem traces back to it. The ideal band for a residential pool is roughly 7.2 to 7.6. Above that, chlorine becomes progressively less effective, which is why a pool that seems to need endless sanitiser very often has a pH problem rather than a chlorine problem. High pH also causes calcium to come out of solution and form scale, which builds up on the waterline, inside heat pumps and gas heaters, and on salt chlorinator cells where it steadily kills their output. Below the ideal band the problem reverses. Acidic water aggressively attacks render, pebble and plaster surfaces, etching them and eventually leaving them rough. It corrodes metal ladders, handrails, light fittings and heater heat exchangers, and it irritates swimmers' eyes and skin. Neither end of the scale is harmless, which is why the goal is to sit in the middle rather than to push in one direction.

How the dosing arithmetic works

The acid required to move pH depends on three things: the volume of water, the size of the pH change, and the total alkalinity, which acts as a buffer resisting the change. As a working rule for a pool with total alkalinity in the normal 80 to 120 ppm band, roughly 100 millilitres of 33 per cent hydrochloric acid per 10,000 litres will lower pH by about 0.2. Dry acid, sodium bisulphate, is granular and needs roughly 150 grams for the same effect. So a 50,000 litre pool moving from 7.8 to 7.4, which is two steps of 0.2, needs approximately 100 millilitres multiplied by 5, multiplied by 2, which is about 1 litre of liquid acid. If total alkalinity is high, above 120 ppm, that requirement rises noticeably because the buffer is fighting you. If alkalinity is low, under 80 ppm, pH becomes unstable and moves more with less acid, which sounds convenient and is actually a problem because it will not stay put. The calculator above deliberately errs on the conservative side and returns a dose that will generally undershoot slightly, because adding more acid is straightforward and pulling pH back up after an overshoot costs both money and time.

Handling acid safely

Concentrated hydrochloric acid, sold in Australia as pool acid or muriatic acid, is the most dangerous substance most pool owners will ever handle, and it deserves genuine respect rather than routine familiarity. It causes severe burns on skin and eye contact, the fumes damage the respiratory tract and corrode metal at a distance, and if it contacts chlorine in any form it produces chlorine gas, which has killed people in domestic settings. The non negotiable rules are these. Wear splash proof eye protection and chemical resistant gloves. Work outdoors with the wind at your back so fumes carry away from you. Always add acid to water, never water to acid, because the reaction is exothermic and can spit concentrated acid back at you. Never store acid next to chlorine, and never use the same measuring jug for both. Keep it in its original labelled container with the cap sealed, out of reach of children, in a cool place away from anything metal you value. If acid contacts skin, flush with running water for a prolonged period and seek medical advice.

Adding acid to the pool the right way

Method matters as much as quantity. With the filtration pump running, dilute the measured acid into a bucket of pool water, then pour the diluted solution slowly around the deep end of the pool, walking as you pour so it disperses rather than pooling in one spot. Never pour acid into the skimmer box, because that sends a concentrated slug straight through the pump, the filter, the heater and the salt cell, and it will corrode all of them. Never pour undiluted acid onto a render, pebble or vinyl surface, because it will bleach and etch it permanently. Let the pump run for at least four to six hours so the water genuinely turns over before you retest, and always retest before adding anything further. Adding a second dose because the pH has not moved on a test taken half an hour later is how pools end up acidic. If you have overshot below 7.0, stop, keep everyone out, and use a buffer or soda ash to bring it back up gradually.

Total alkalinity, the variable that decides everything

Total alkalinity is the concentration of carbonates and bicarbonates in the water, and it functions as the shock absorber for pH. It is the reason two pools of identical volume can need very different acid doses to make the same pH change. When alkalinity sits in the 80 to 120 ppm band, pH is stable and responds predictably to dosing. When alkalinity is high, pH is stubborn on the way down and springs back up quickly, so owners find themselves adding acid weekly and wondering why nothing sticks. The fix is to lower alkalinity deliberately, which is done using a slow acid addition method where acid is added to a specific area of the pool with the circulation off, allowing it to act on the alkalinity before dispersing. Your pool shop will walk you through it and it is genuinely worth doing, because it converts a recurring weekly cost into a one off project. When alkalinity is low, pH becomes erratic and swings widely, and the answer is to raise alkalinity with buffer before trying to control pH at all.

Why your pH keeps climbing

If you are dosing acid regularly, it is worth identifying the cause rather than accepting it as normal. New render, plaster or pebble surfaces leach alkaline material as they cure, and a pool in its first year will consume far more acid than the same pool in year five. Salt chlorinators raise pH as a by product of the electrolysis process, which is why salt pools generally need more acid than pools dosed with granular chlorine. Water features, fountains, spa jets and waterfalls aerate the water and drive off dissolved carbon dioxide, which pushes pH up steadily, so a pool with a constantly running feature will climb faster than a still one. Topping up with hard alkaline mains water in a region with high water hardness adds alkalinity every time. Liquid chlorine also raises pH slightly with every dose. Working out which of these applies to your pool tells you whether the acid demand is temporary, structural or fixable.

A sensible routine

Test pH and total alkalinity weekly through summer and fortnightly through the cooler months, using a kit with in date reagents rather than strips that have been in the sun. Correct alkalinity into the right band first, then pH, then chlorine, in that order, because each depends on the one before it. Dose in stages, circulate properly, and retest before adding more. Keep a simple written log of readings and doses, because the pattern across a season tells you far more than any individual reading, and it makes a conversation with a pool professional far more productive. And treat the product label as the final authority. Concentrations vary between brands and batches, and the label is the only document that describes what is actually in the container in front of you.
