Understanding double vs triple glazing cost comparisons in Australia

What each option costs in 2026

Single glazed windows in standard aluminium run $400 to $900 per opening supplied and installed. Double glazing runs $900 to $2,000, and more again in uPVC or thermally broken aluminium frames. Triple glazing runs $1,600 to $3,500 per window, typically 60 to 100 per cent above double for the equivalent frame. The thermal numbers, and what they actually mean

Performance is measured as a U-value in watts per square metre per kelvin, where lower is better. A single glazed aluminium window sits around 6.0 to 7.0, which thermally is close to leaving a hole in the wall. Standard double glazing drops that to about 2.5 to 3.5, and double with a low-E coating and argon fill reaches roughly 1.8. Triple glazing with low-E coatings and argon or krypton fill reaches 0.8 to 1.6. The critical observation is where the gains sit. Going from single to double roughly halves the heat transfer, an enormous improvement. Going from double to triple improves it again but by a much smaller absolute amount, while the cost roughly doubles. That diminishing return is the entire story of this comparison in Australia.

Where triple glazing genuinely is worth it in Australia

There are real cases, and they are specific. The alpine zone, meaning Thredbo, Jindabyne, Perisher and the Victorian high country, has a heating season long enough for the numbers to work. Tasmania, particularly the highlands and the west, has a genuine case. Certified Passive House builds require the whole envelope to hit performance targets, and triple glazing is generally necessary to get there regardless of simple payback, because the goal is a performance standard rather than an energy bill. Homes with severe and constant noise exposure, directly under a flight path or fronting a major arterial, can justify it, although asymmetric double glazing often achieves comparable acoustic results for far less. And homes with very large expanses of glazing in cold climates face enough absolute heat loss that the third pane starts to matter. The frame matters more than the third pane

This is the point most homeowners miss and most window salespeople do not lead with. Glazing is sold by the number of panes, but a significant share of the heat moving through a window travels through the frame, not the glass. The practical hierarchy is clear: double glazing in a thermally broken or uPVC frame outperforms triple glazing in a standard aluminium frame, and costs less. If your budget allows one upgrade, upgrade the frame.

What window suppliers and building designers actually recommend

Ask an Australian building designer and the recommendation is consistent: double glazing with low-E coating in a thermally broken or uPVC frame, specified differently by orientation, is the right answer for the overwhelming majority of homes in this country.
