- If you are going to attend more than four times, price the clinic's multi session pack before you book the first visit. Packs of five and ten typically shave 10 to 18 percent off the per session rate, but many clinics will not backdate a pack once you have already paid casual rates, so the saving is only available if you commit up front.
- Check whether your provider is registered with a fund recognised association such as AAMT, ANTA or Massage and Myotherapy Australia before your first appointment, not after. An unrecognised provider number means a $90 receipt that your fund will simply decline, and there is no retrospective fix.
- Time your last few sessions of the calendar year against your extras limit. Most policies reset on 1 January, so if you have $180 of unused massage cover in late December, that is money that vanishes at midnight while a January session starts a fresh limit.

What actually happens in an appointment
A dry cupping session involves the practitioner placing glass, plastic or silicone cups on the skin and creating suction with a hand pump or, in fire cupping, a brief flame that heats the air inside the cup before it is applied. Cups are either left static for a few minutes or glided across oiled skin. The visit begins with a short intake conversation and finishes with the cups being removed and the area wiped down.
Wet cupping, also called hijama, adds a step in which the practitioner makes small superficial scratches on the skin before reapplying suction. Because it breaks the skin, it involves single use blades, sharps disposal and stricter infection control, and it is offered by a much smaller pool of clinics. Prices reflect that, typically $110 to $180 per session.
Who provides it and how that moves the price
Cupping in Australia is performed by remedial massage therapists, myotherapists, registered acupuncturists and some physiotherapists. Remedial massage therapists are the cheapest entry point, generally $70 to $95 for a half hour. Myotherapists sit around $85 to $110. AHPRA registered acupuncturists usually charge $90 to $130 because their appointments are billed under the acupuncture item and carry a registered health practitioner overhead.
Physiotherapists charge the most, commonly $95 to $150, because cupping is delivered inside a standard physio consultation with its own assessment and notes. If you specifically want the physio receipt for extras purposes, that premium may be worth it, but if you only want the technique itself the massage route is materially cheaper.
Private health extras and what is actually claimable
There is no Medicare rebate for cupping in any form. It is not on the MBS, it is not covered under a GP chronic condition management plan, and no referral will make it claimable. Every dollar is either out of pocket or paid through private health extras.
Extras cover for cupping is indirect. Funds do not list cupping as its own benefit category. They pay against remedial massage or acupuncture, and only when the provider holds a recognised provider number. Typical remedial massage benefits sit at $20 to $40 per visit with an annual sub limit of $200 to $500 on mid tier extras, and acupuncture benefits are similar. Since 1 April 2019, following the Commonwealth review of natural therapies, several natural therapy categories were removed from extras cover altogether, so it is worth reading your fund's current provider list rather than an older policy document.

Some larger wellness clinics run monthly memberships at $79 to $129 that include one appointment plus a discounted rate on extras. These only make sense if you genuinely attend every month, since unused months rarely roll over.
Booking practicalities worth knowing before you pay
Cancellation policies are tighter than most people expect. A 24 hour notice window with a 50 percent or full session fee is standard at established clinics, and no show fees are routinely charged to the card on file.
Ask what the price includes. Some clinics quote a cupping rate that assumes a bare minimum room booking and then charge separately for assessment time on a first visit, adding $20 to $35 to the initial appointment.
