What a Maldives trip costs from Australia in 2026

The Maldives has the widest cost range of any destination on this list, because the same country can be done for $2,600 or $30,000 for the same seven nights. Return economy flights from the east coast through Singapore, Kuala Lumpur or Colombo typically run $1,500 to $2,300, which is modest for a long haul destination, and total travel time is 15 to 19 hours with one connection. Everything after that depends on the accommodation decision. A week at a local island guesthouse comes to roughly $2,600 to $3,600 per person all in. A week at a mid-tier resort with a beach villa and half board runs $6,500 to $9,000 per person once transfers and taxes are counted. A week in an overwater villa at a Soneva or Four Seasons tier property comfortably exceeds $20,000 per person. The airfare is almost irrelevant here, which is the opposite of Egypt or Morocco.

Flights and routing reality

Getting to Malé is one of the easier long haul runs from Australia. Singapore Airlines through Singapore, Malaysia Airlines and Batik through Kuala Lumpur, SriLankan through Colombo and Emirates through Dubai all connect, with one stop and roughly 15 to 19 hours total from the east coast. Perth is the closest departure at around 14 hours. The critical scheduling point is not the international leg but what happens after it. Seaplanes only operate in daylight hours, so if your international flight lands in Malé in the late afternoon or evening, you cannot reach a seaplane resort that day and will be paying for an unplanned night at a Hulhumalé airport hotel. Resorts will tell you this only if asked, so check your arrival time against the seaplane cut off before you book the flight, not after.

Daily budget tiers on the ground

The three tiers here are not variations on a theme, they are different countries. A local island guesthouse on Maafushi, Dhigurah or Thulusdhoo costs $80 to $150 a night including meals, with excursions like a snorkelling trip or a sandbank picnic at $30 to $60, putting a full day at roughly $150 to $200. A mid-tier resort villa with half board runs $450 to $900 a night for two, plus taxes, and with a couple of activities and drinks a realistic per person day is $500 to $750. The top tier begins around $1,500 a night for the villa and goes to $5,000 or more, with dining, diving and spa on top, so $1,700 to $3,000 per person per day is normal at that level. There is very little in between, because the Maldives resort model is one property per island and each island picks a market.

Entry requirements for an Australian passport

Australians receive a free 30 day tourist visa on arrival in the Maldives, issued at Velana International Airport with no advance application or fee. The requirements are a passport valid for at least one month beyond arrival, a confirmed accommodation booking covering your stay and an onward or return ticket, and immigration genuinely does check the accommodation booking because independent unbooked travel does not fit how the country is structured. An online traveller declaration form is generally required within the 96 hours before arrival, which is free and takes a few minutes but is easy to forget. Note also that the Maldives has strict prohibitions on importing alcohol, pork products and certain other items into the country, and bags are screened on arrival, with any duty free alcohol held and returned to you on departure. Best and worst times to go

The Maldives runs on two monsoons. The northeast monsoon from November through April is the dry season, with the least rain, the calmest seas, the best underwater visibility and the highest prices, peaking hard from mid December through February when Christmas and New Year rates at good resorts can be double the shoulder rate and often carry compulsory gala dinner charges. The southwest monsoon from May through October brings the wet season, with heavier rain, more wind and choppier water. It is important to be accurate about what that means: it does not rain all day every day, and you will still get substantial sunshine, but squalls are frequent and visibility for diving drops. Rates fall 35 to 50 per cent in return. For divers and snorkellers there is a genuine argument for going wet, because the plankton bloom that reduces visibility is precisely what draws manta rays and whale sharks to Hanifaru Bay in Baa Atoll from roughly June to November. The shoulder months of November, March and April are the best balance for most travellers.

The costs that dominate a Maldives budget

Two lines dominate and both sit outside the room rate. The first is the transfer. A return seaplane to an outer atoll resort commonly runs US$550 to US$900 per adult, roughly $850 to $1,400, and a domestic flight plus speedboat combination for the far southern atolls is $350 to $600. Only the resorts within speedboat range of Malé escape this, at $150 to $280 return. On a couple's holiday the transfer decision is worth $1,200 to $2,200. The second is taxes and service, where 16 per cent GST, a 10 per cent service charge and a per person per night green tax stack to roughly 28 to 30 per cent on everything spent at the resort, and are routinely excluded from the advertised rate. After those, food and drink is the third: on a resort island there is no alternative supplier, so a la carte dinners run $80 to $150 per person and a bottle of wine can be $90 to $180. Diving at $80 to $130 per guided dive plus gear hire is the main discretionary line.

Health, safety and currency

No vaccinations are required for entry to the Maldives from Australia beyond keeping routine immunisations current, and the destination is medically straightforward, but the geography creates a specific insurance issue. Resort islands are small and remote, medical facilities beyond a resort doctor are in Malé, and a serious problem means an evacuation by speedboat or seaplane. Comprehensive travel insurance with proper medical evacuation cover matters more here than the low apparent risk suggests, and divers must specifically check that their policy covers recreational diving to the depths they intend, including hyperbaric chamber treatment, because many standard policies exclude it. The currency is the Maldivian rufiyaa, but resorts price and bill in US dollars almost universally and cards are accepted everywhere on resort islands, so the practical currency question is your card's foreign transaction fee rather than exchange. On local islands, rufiyaa cash is more useful. Sun exposure near the equator is stronger than most Australians expect even by our standards, and reef safe sunscreen is required at many resorts.
