- Decide between Denarau and the outer islands before you compare any prices, because they are different products with different cost structures. Denarau and the Coral Coast are road accessible, so you pay a modest coach or taxi transfer and can eat outside the resort, which caps your food spend. The Mamanucas and Yasawas need a boat or seaplane and effectively lock you into a meal plan, so a room rate that looks $80 a night cheaper can be $150 a day dearer once transfers and forced dining are added.
- Travel in the wet season deliberately rather than accidentally. November, and the second half of April, sit at the edges of the cyclone window and often deliver a genuinely good weather run at twenty five percent off peak rates. What you should avoid is the Christmas to mid January block, which manages the worst of both worlds, cyclone risk plus Australian school holiday pricing that erases the wet season discount entirely.
- Book resort activities in Fiji rather than prepaid packages where you can. Fiji is close but it is not cheap, and that catches Australians out. Mid-range Fiji on the Coral Coast or Denarau in a three to four star property with some meals out is around $250 a day per person. Mainstream resort Fiji at a four or five star island property with a meal plan is $340 to $450 a day. Luxury Fiji, the private island and overwater bure end of the market, starts around $780 a day and goes to several thousand. The gap between mid-range and resort is much wider in Fiji than in Southeast Asia because the resorts are effectively closed economies.

Wet season days are hot and humid, typically twenty eight to thirty one degrees, with heavy afternoon downpours rather than all day rain, and the islands are green and the water warm. Resort rates fall twenty to thirty percent. The risk is genuine though. A named cyclone can close Nadi airport, cancel outer island boat transfers for days, and travel insurance almost universally stops covering a storm the moment it is named, so buying cover after a system appears on the forecast is too late. The dry season, May through October, brings twenty five to twenty eight degree days, low humidity and reliable sun, which is why it costs more.
Meal plans, transfers and the resort trap
Two costs sit outside the room rate and routinely blow up Fiji budgets. Meal plans are the first.
