The age threshold that decides it
Hot water systems have a fairly predictable service life in Australia, and that life is what should drive the decision more than the fault itself. Rebates change the answer, so check them first
Australia has a patchwork of hot water incentives that materially shift the comparison. Small scale technology certificates apply nationally to heat pumps and solar hot water and are usually discounted off the invoice by the installer. There is a specific failure pattern worth naming. A tank starts running lukewarm, a plumber replaces the lower element and thermostat for $420, and hot water comes back. Six months later the upper element goes, another $350. Four months after that the tank weeps. The underlying cause was never the elements, it was scale build up and an exhausted anode, and each repair addressed a symptom. If your unit is past ten years and you are on your second repair inside two years, stop repairing.
