That figure buys an inspection, humane trapping, release under licence, and sealing of the obvious entry points. The range widens fast once complications appear. A double storey house with a steep tile roof, five or six entry points and a ceiling full of soiled insulation can run past $2,000 by the time proofing and clean-up are finished. At the other end, a single possum in an accessible eave with one clear gap can be dealt with for under $250 in most capital cities. Regional call-out fees add $80 to $150 where the operator is travelling more than an hour each way.

Why the trapping is the cheap part

The counter-intuitive thing about possum pricing is that the animal itself is the smallest line on the invoice. Trapping is quick, and a competent operator will often have the possum out within a day or two of setting a cage. The expensive work is the exclusion, which means walking the entire roofline, identifying every gap wider than roughly 5cm, and closing them with materials the animal cannot chew through. That usually means galvanised mesh, metal flashing or timber, never expanding foam or plastic, because a brushtail will destroy soft materials in a single night. The legal position, which is not optional

Possums are protected native wildlife under state legislation across Australia, including the Biodiversity Conservation Act in NSW, the Wildlife Act in Victoria, and equivalent instruments in every other jurisdiction. It is an offence to harm a possum, and it is also an offence to relocate one to a distant reserve. Under NSW and Victorian rules a trapped possum must be released within about 50 metres of where it was caught, on the same property or immediately adjacent, and generally within 24 hours of capture. This is the reason a legitimate operator will insist on proofing as part of the job. They know the animal is going to be standing on your fence that same night looking at the roof it just left. Anyone offering to take the possum away to the bush is either breaking the law or lying to you, and in both cases you should not hire them.

Signs you have a possum rather than a rat

The distinction matters because the pricing and method are completely different. Possums are heavy, so the noise is a slow thump or a drag rather than the fast scurrying of rodents. They are strictly nocturnal and tend to move at dusk and again before dawn, following a fairly regular schedule. Droppings are cylindrical and roughly 1 to 2cm long, far larger than rat pellets. Brushtails also make a distinctive guttural hissing and clicking during territorial disputes, which most people describe as sounding like a growl. If the noise is continuous through the night, small and fast, and accompanied by grease marks along beams, you are dealing with rodents and should price that job separately, because the treatment is baiting and proofing rather than trapping under a wildlife licence.

Damage costs that sit behind the removal fee

The removal quote is often the smaller half of the total spend. Possums urinate and defecate where they sleep, and over a season that saturates ceiling insulation, stains plasterboard and creates an ammonia smell that permeates the rooms below. Replacing a ceiling's worth of soiled batts across an average three bedroom home costs roughly $1,200 to $2,000 including removal and disposal of the old material. Chewed electrical cabling is the more serious risk and needs a licensed electrician to inspect and repair, which is not work a pest operator can legally perform. Budgeting for the removal alone, then being surprised by the remediation, is the most common way these jobs blow out.

Choosing an operator and what to ask

Ask three questions before you book. First, are they licensed for wildlife handling in your state, and can they name the licence. Second, does the quoted price include proofing, and how many entry points does it cover before extra charges start. Third, is there a warranty period, and what triggers a free return visit. A fixed-price job with a 6 or 12 month proofing guarantee is the structure you want, because it aligns the operator's interest with yours. If they only get paid to trap, they have no reason to seal properly. Also confirm public liability insurance, because the work happens on your roof and inside your ceiling space, and confirm whether they will supply photographs of the sealed entry points. Reputable companies do this without being asked.

Timing the job

Spring and early summer are the busiest months for possum call-outs because juveniles disperse from their mothers and go looking for territory, which in suburban Australia means roof cavities. If you can, book proofing work in late autumn or winter when demand is softer and operators are more flexible on price. One important exception, if you suspect a female with young in the roof, say so when you book. Separating a mother from dependent joeys is both cruel and illegal, and a proper operator will delay the exclusion until the young are mobile, which can push the job out by several weeks.
