Understanding gravels in Australia

Gravel is sold by the cubic metre (or in 25L bags for small jobs). This calculator multiplies your area by the depth to give the volume you need, plus a delivery estimate.

A typical driveway uses 75–100mm of gravel; paths and drainage often use 50mm. Bulk delivery is far cheaper than bags for larger areas.

Frequently asked questions

How much gravel do I need?

Multiply area by depth, e.g. 20m² at 75mm needs about 1.5m³. The calculator does this and converts to bags for small jobs.

Is bulk or bagged gravel cheaper?

Bulk delivery is much cheaper per cubic metre than bags, bags only make sense for very small quantities.

How deep should gravel be?

About 75–100mm for a driveway, 50mm for paths and garden beds. Deeper layers need more material.
