Engineered stone benchtops have been prohibited in Australia since 1 July 2024. Work health and safety ministers agreed to a national ban on the manufacture, supply, processing and installation of engineered stone benchtops, panels and slabs, following Safe Work Australia's finding that no level of crystalline silica content could be considered safe for workers cutting the material. The driver was accelerated silicosis, an aggressive and irreversible lung disease that had appeared in Australian stonemasons at rates and ages that alarmed regulators, in some cases in workers in their thirties. Every state and territory implemented the prohibition, with limited transitional arrangements for contracts already in place at the time. What this means if you already have engineered stone
Nothing needs to change. An installed engineered stone benchtop is entirely legal to keep and presents no health risk in normal domestic use, because the hazard was always inhalation of respirable silica dust generated by cutting, grinding and polishing the material, not the finished surface in your kitchen. What has changed is what happens when you eventually renovate. Removal, and any repair or modification that involves cutting, is now controlled work that must be performed by a licensed operator using water suppression and respiratory protection, with notification requirements in most jurisdictions. Budget more for demolition of an engineered stone kitchen than you would have a few years ago, and do not let a general builder cut it out with an angle grinder, which is both illegal and genuinely dangerous.
What the alternatives cost in 2026
Granite runs $600 to $1,000 per square metre installed for the commercially quarried stones most people choose, with rare imported slabs going considerably higher. Porcelain and sintered stone slabs run $700 to $1,300 installed, with large format sheets and designer patterns at the upper end. If what appealed about engineered stone was mainly the price, granite in a common commercial colour is the closer match on budget and gives you a warmer, more characterful result with a small sealing obligation attached. Either way, the fabrication specification matters more to the final invoice than the material choice does, so fix your layout before templating, decide on edge thickness and pattern matching upfront rather than as variations, and get the offcut written into the order. Those three decisions typically move the total more than choosing granite over porcelain will.
