- Compare imported flat pack canopies against local custom builds honestly. An imported alloy canopy landed in Australia sits around $2,200 to $3,400 and is genuinely fine for weekend touring, while a local custom build is $5,000 to $9,000 and gets you exact tray dimensions, heavier gauge sheet and warranty support you can actually chase. If you are not living out of the ute, the imported unit usually wins on value.
- Keep the factory tub if you can. What a ute canopy costs in Australia in 2026
A canopy is one of the few ute accessories where the price range is genuinely enormous, and the reason is that three quite different products all share the word. An imported flat pack aluminium canopy for a tub lands around $2,200 to $3,200 fitted. A locally built alloy canopy on a tray sits between $5,500 and $9,500 supplied and fitted. For a typical dual cab with an aluminium canopy on an alloy tray, a shelf inside and no paint work, expect $7,500 to $9,000 all up including the tray. Drop the tray and mount the same canopy into the factory tub and the same build is $3,600 to $5,000. That single decision moves the number more than any other choice on this page.
Material choice and what it actually buys you
Aluminium is the default because it gives you the best strength to weight ratio and it does not rust when the seals eventually leak. A 2.5mm alloy canopy for a dual cab weighs around 85kg to 110kg bare. Steel canopies cost about eighteen per cent more and weigh 40kg to 60kg more, but they take genuine abuse from tools, gas bottles and steel cages without denting, which is why trade builds still specify them.
Fibreglass and composite canopies are the cheapest of the three at roughly $1,800 to $3,000 fitted, and they are the lightest at 55kg to 75kg. They are also the only ones that can be gel coated or painted to a factory colour convincingly. The trade off is impact resistance. A fibreglass canopy that takes a hit from a branch on a bush track cracks rather than dents, and the repair is a panel shop job rather than a hammer and a swear word.
Tray mount versus tub mount
Tub mount canopies use the factory tub as the floor. They are cheaper, quicker to fit and reversible if you sell the ute, but you are stuck with the tub aperture and the wheel arch intrusion, and load height sits higher. Tray mount canopies sit on a flat alloy tray, giving you a full width flat floor, better door access down both sides and usually a lower deck. That flexibility costs you the tray, which is $3,000 to $4,500 for a dual cab, plus $400 to $800 for tub removal and rear bar adjustment.
Half canopies, sometimes called dog boxes, cover the front third of the tub and leave the rest open. They are $1,400 to $2,600 and they suit people who need secure dry storage for tools but still want to throw a mower or a bike in the back.
Fitout costs and where the money goes
A twin drawer system with a fridge slide is the single most expensive fitout item at roughly $2,000 to $2,900 installed, and it also adds 55kg to 70kg empty. Water tanks are cheaper than people expect at $700 to $1,100 for a 60L to 80L underbody or internal tank with a tap and filler. This is the part most canopy quotes gloss over.
